Is Komi Can’t Communicate Anime a Romance?

Komi Can’t Communicate encompasses different genres, including drama, coming-of-age, slice-of-life, and more. However, the recurring romantic undertones and sequences throughout the series have led many fans and viewers to mark it as a romantic comedy.

For clarity, Komi Can’t Communicate follows the life of the series protagonist named Shoko Komi, as she adjusts to life at her new school. Komi is portrayed as a beautiful but shy girl with communication difficulties but determined to overcome those challenges and become influential in her school society.

To do this, she has set herself a goal of making 100 friends before the end of the school year. To achieve this goal, however, she would need help, and she finds that help through her empathetic classmate, a rather plain boy named Hitohito Tadano.

Throughout the series, Komi and Tadano have been placed in situations where fans and viewers have misinterpreted their actions as the beginning of a blossoming love story. For the most part, though, their relationship has remained on the platonic level and has yet to evolve to the point where they can be considered star-crossed lovers.

Komi Can’t Communicate is More of a Slice-of-life, Coming-of-Age Anime

As previously mentioned, the plot of Komi Can’t Communicate cuts across different genres but predominantly explores the coming-of-age and slice-of-life aspects of a young girl in a typical Japanese high school. Komi’s primary goal is to make friends, and she is fortunate to have found her first friend in Tadano.

Typically, fans of the series have long expected romantic feelings to develop between Tadano and Komi. Still, to this point in the series, those expectations have yet to become a reality because while Komi developed feelings of gratitude towards Tadano, her feelings toward him are just that, and have yet to evolve into romance.

Some of her actions which include becoming flustered around him and some of the other friends she has managed to make are just indications that she is adjusting to social life in general and not necessarily about feelings of love she might be developing for Tadano.

The story arc also explores Tadano’s personality and how he behaves around Komi, one of the most popular girls in his school. Undoubtedly, he might have entertained, albeit briefly, the idea of being Komi’s boyfriend, but he also knows enough not to want to keep Komi to himself.

Despite his potential feelings of romantic love towards Komi, he spends his time helping Komi actualize her goal of ending her communication disorder by making as many as 100 friends to boost her social life.
