Lights Out 2 Release Date: Will The Sequel Still Happen?

Lights Out 2 release date has not been fixed as the movie is not even in development yet. However, a Lights Out sequel can still happen, as the film’s director confirmed in 2022.

Lights Out is an American horror film that was released in 2016. It was quite successful, so much so that a sequel was green-lit just days after the film was released. This was back in 2016, and several years down the line, that sequel is yet to be seen. The film’s director, David Sandberg, has provided some ray of hope but warned that there are no concrete plans yet.

How Old is Lights Out?

Lights Out is 7 years old. The horror film was released on the 22nd of July 2016 in the U.S. and Canada. It was then released in other parts of the globe that same month as well.

Lights Out tells the story of Rebecca and Martin, two half-siblings who have to work hard to conquer an evil supernatural entity named Diana that has ties to their mother, Sophie, and is sensitive to light. Lights Out is based on a 2013 short film of the same name directed by David Sandberg.

Its cast members included the likes of Teresa Palmer as Rebecca and Gabriel Bateman as Martin. Other cast members are Alexander DiPersia, Billy Burke, and Maria Bello. Lights Out was both a critical and commercial success. It received good reviews from many fans and movie critics. It also grossed $438 million on a budget of about $4.9 million.

Is There Going to Be Lights Out 2?

The outstanding success that Lights Out 1 enjoyed made the production studios, Warner Bros, confirm that there will be a sequel just a week after it debuted in cinemas. The film’s director, David Sandberg, also confirmed that he would be returning to direct the sequel. Therefore there will be Lights Out 2. However, it is not yet known the shape that Lights Out 2 will take.

The first film ended without any cliffhanger as Diana later died, but she could be brought back in a myriad of ways. A new monster could also be introduced entirely. One thing that is certain is that the likes of Gabriel Bateman, who plays Martin, will return. He will, of course, be several years older in real life now, and this, too, will be worked into the story as well.

When Will Lights Out 2 Be Released?

There is no release date for the Lights Out sequel. In fact, the project has been in limbo for several years now. Although it was confirmed as far back as 2016, it has neither gone into development nor become production. This has made many fans of the movie ask questions about its status, and there has been little official response since.

However, during San Diego Comic-Con in mid-2022, the film’s director made it known that Lights Out 2 could still happen. He accepted the fact that Gabriel was getting older in real life but pointed out that a solution could be to make the story take place some years down the line. Sandberg restated that there were no confirmed plans about Lights Out 2 at the moment but that there were discussions about it. So, there you have it. Lights Out 2 can still happen, but there is no release date yet.

Reasons Behind the Delay of Lights Out 2

The project has been delayed for several years, and one reason for this is the fact that Sandberg and Warner Bros, the company that distributes the film, has been very busy since 2016 till date with DCEU movies.

These DCEU Movies include Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), Suicide Squad (2016), Justice League (2017), Wonder Woman (2017), Aquaman (2018), Shazam! (2019), and Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023). Sandberg directed two of these blockbuster movies, Shazam! and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, showing how busy he has been.

Where To Watch Lights Out?

Lights Out is, of course, no longer in the cinemas, but you can watch it on streaming platforms such as Roku TV, Flicks UK, Vudu, Netflix, Apple TV, Amazon Video, Microsoft Store, YouTube Video, Telstra TV, and Fetch TV. Some of these platforms also have options for outright purchase as well. Lights Out has also been made available on Digital HD and Blu-ray, and one can purchase a copy for themselves.
