Horror films haven’t exactly done very well commercially in recent times so it was a surprise when Lights Out came out and was a huge success. The David F. Sandberg-directed movie was so successful that a sequel was green-lit just days after the film was released in 2016. Its been 8 years now and talk of the sequel has died down, but Sandberg still believes that the project will see the light of day.
How Old is Lights Out?
Lights Out hit the screen in 2016, making it 8 years old. The horror film was first released in the U.S. and Canada before reaching other parts of the globe that same month.
The film is based on a short story that came out in 2013. That project was made by David Sandberg who producers got behind to do a full movie on the same story. There is no question that he delivered on the film that marked his debut as a director. Sandberg worked with Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Bateman, Alexander DiPersia, and others on the movie that follows half-siblings Rebecca and Martin as they fight to conquer an evil entity that has taken over their mother.
Is There Going to Be Lights Out 2?
Warner Bros did not waste time before they confirmed that Lights Out was going to have a sequel. The confirmation came just a week after it debuted in cinemas. That’s how good and well received it was.
Film director David Sandberg also confirmed that he would be returning to direct the sequel. Therefore there will be Lights Out 2. However, it is not yet known the shape that Lights Out 2 will take.
The first film ended without any cliffhanger as Diana later died, but she could be brought back in a myriad of ways. A new monster could also be introduced entirely. One thing that is certain is that the likes of Gabriel Bateman, who plays Martin, will return. He will, of course, be several years older in real life now, and this, too, will be worked into the story as well.
When Will Lights Out 2 Be Released?
No release date has been set for Lights Out 2. While the sequel was confirmed as far back as 2016, it has not gone into development. There has in fact been so much silence around the project that you may believe that plans for it has been shelved. Many fans have been asking questions but no answers have been provided.
However, during San Diego Comic-Con in mid-2022, the film’s director made it known that Lights Out 2 could still happen. He accepted the fact that Gabriel was getting older in real life but pointed out that a solution could be to make the story take place some years down the line. Sandberg restated that there were no confirmed plans about Lights Out 2 at the moment but that there were discussions about it. So, there you have it. Lights Out 2 can still happen, but there is no release date yet.
Reasons Behind the Delay of Lights Out 2
Lights Out has been delayed for several years, and there are many reasons why it has happened. Other than reasons surrounding budget and a good script, one plausible reason could be the fact that Sandberg and movie distributors Warner Bros have been tied up with DCEU movies; the Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman movies among others in the DC Comics universe. Sandberg directed two of these blockbuster movies.
Where To Watch Lights Out?
Lights Out is, of course, no longer in the cinemas, but you can watch it on streaming platforms such as Roku TV, Flicks UK, Vudu, Netflix, Apple TV, Amazon Video, Microsoft Store, YouTube Video, Telstra TV, and Fetch TV. Some of these platforms also have options for outright purchase as well. Lights Out has also been made available on Digital HD and Blu-ray, and one can purchase a copy for themselves.
