How Did Sasuke Get the Rinnegan and Did He Lose It?

In Naruto Shippuden, the Sage of six paths granted Sasuke a portion of his power; thus, the Rinnegan dojutsu was unleashed in Sasuke’s left eye. However, Sasuke lost his Rinnegan in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations when a possessed Boruto (possessed by Momoshiki) stabbed Sasuke’s Rinnegan by driving a kunai through Sasuke’s left eye to prevent Sasuke’s squad from teleporting.

There are three great eyes in the Naruto Anime world, the Byakugan, the Sharingan, and the Rinnegan. The Rinnegan is known to only awaken in persons who significantly change the course of the world, making it the strongest of the three eyes. A person with the Rinnegan is renowned for drastically altering the universe; in other words, they can bring peace and harmony or complete anarchy.

Sasuke is renowned for his talent as a ninja. He was hailed as a genius right from his childhood. One of his most powerful and unique traits, which stands him out in Naruto, is his trademark Sharingan. Uchiha Sasuke acquired the Rinnegan through an evolutionary process with his Sharingan.

In addition to his Sharingan giving him special visual abilities and the ability to cast genjutsu with just a stare, the evolution of his eyes into the Rinnegan also unlocked many powerful abilities that made him one of the strongest ninjas.

How Sasuke Got The Rinnegan

The strength of both of Hagoromo’s sons would need to be combined for the Rinnegan to awaken. Thus, the only people who can awaken the Rinnegan are their reincarnations or those who are using their chakra.

Sasuke Uchiha, who was already Indra Otsutsuki’s reincarnation (Indra is Hagoromo’s son), encountered Hagoromo when conversing in his subconscious with Hagoromo Otsutsuki as he was close to death during the Fourth Great Ninja War. At this time, he was on the verge of death, but fate was working to bring him back to life through Kabuto, who gave a portion of his body to heal him.

Obtaining the Rinnegan isn’t quite simple. There are only three known people in the entire Naruto Anime world that have this power. The Sage of the Six Paths, Hagoromo Otsutsuki, is the original owner of the Rinnegan, which was passed down to him by his mother, Kaguya Otsutsuki, who possessed the Rinne Sharingan, a Kekkei Mora that was connected to both the Sharingan and the Rinnegan.

Hagoromo’s son, Indra Otsutsuki, who founded the Uchiha clan, also inherited the Sharingan’s visual abilities. Since the Uchiha clan are descendants of Indra, they are all heirs to a portion of the power the Sage of Six Paths possessed.

Hagoromo realized that Sasuke and Naruto could alter the course of history and stop Kaguya from seizing power as they conversed and discussed Sasuke’s motivations. As a response, Hagoromo gave him the other half of the seal to permanently end Kaguya’s reign and the Yin half of the Six Paths chakra. Thus, Sasuke’s left Sharingan transformed into a Rinnegan after Hagoromo, like Naruto, gave him half of his chakra.

When Does Sasuke Get The Rinnegan?

Uchiha Sasuke gets the Rinnegan in episode 424 of the Naruto Shippuden manga anime series. Titled “To Rise Up,” this episode sees Sasuke with the Rinnegan in his left eye for the first time. It is also in this episode that Sasuke’s Mangekya Sharingan evolves into the Rinnegan.

Uchiha Sasuke acquired several power-ups, including the Cursed Seal, the Mangekyo Sharingan, and even the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan. Still, none of them had the same impact on him as the glorious eye of the Rinnegan, which he finally attained in the Fourth Great Ninja War.

In episode 424, Madara stabs Sasuke with his Rinnegan powers. The stab was deep enough to Pierce Sasuke’s heart, which opened up a portal for Sasuke and helped him telepathically communicate with the Sage of six paths. As previously explained, Sasuke obtains the Rinnegan when he is given half of Sage’s chakra through his communication with the Sage of Six paths.

Sasuke Rinnegan Abilities

Among the Three Great Dojutsu, the Rinnegan, which means Samsara Eye, is thought to be the most powerful eye. According to legend, when chaos arises, the person who wields the Rinnegan is sent from the heavens to either become a “God of Creation” who will calm the earth or a “God of Destruction” who will destroy all.

The Rinnegan Eye is characterized by concentric circles that cover the eyeball. Unlike other Dojutsu, the Rinnegan possesses a set of potent abilities called the Six Paths Powers, which singles it out as the most sought-after Dojutsu. The Rinnegan is extremely powerful, but Sasuke’s Rinnegan has unique abilities.

Sasuke’s Rinnegan possesses unique six tomoes, which suggests greater ocular powers. Sasuke can make use of an ability called Amenotekikara in combat. The Amenotekikara ability allows him to swap the places of two objects instantly within a certain range.

Over the years, Sasuke has mastered this ability greatly and learned how to swap everything and anything with himself. Furthermore, Sasuke can also open portals to different dimensions using his Rinnegan, however, this Jutsu takes up a lot of chakra for him, and he only learned it sometime after the end of the story during the time skip.

The Rinnegan has incredible powers. It can seal the Ten-Tails inside a person’s body to form a Jinchuriki and be the only means of breaking the seal placed on the Outer Path’s Demonic Statue and summoning it. Here are some of the powerful abilities the Rinnegan has:

Deciphering the stone tablet

The Stone Tablet was created by Hagoromo Otsutsuki to keep future Indra and Asura reincarnations from recapturing the abilities of the Sage of Six Paths and obtaining the Rinnegan.

The Sharingan and the Mangekyo Sharingan can partly read this tablet, but the Rinnegan is the only eye that can fully comprehend it. This eye allowed for the interpretation of all the Uchiha clan’s secrets and their methods of acquisition.

Manifestation of Chakra Chains

The user of the Rinnegan can generate chakra chains strong enough to tie anyone they come in contact with, thanks to the strength of the seventh route of the Rinnegan, also known as the Outer Path. Even the powerful-tailed animals cannot escape their grip due to their immense power.

Anyone subjected to these chains will feel excruciating pain, and their chakra will be suppressed, making them weaker. Madara used this power from his Rinnegan to free Kurama from Naruto in a matter of seconds.

The capacity to use the Rinne Rebirth method to bring anyone back to life is unquestionably the most amazing Six Paths ability of the Rinnegan. According to legend, Rinnegan’s wielder has direct control over life and death. By using their life force, the user can quickly raise the dead.

At the price of his life, Nagato Uzumaki brought back every member of Konoha’s population that he had killed during his invasion. Obito Uchiha used this method to revive Madara during the Fourth Great Ninja War.

Creating the six paths of pain

Any Rinnegan user has the power to manufacture chakra rods that can be utilized as chakra receivers and, by so doing, create the Six Paths of Pain. According to the name, the user creates six bodies that act on their behalf by receiving chakra through the black rods.

Being able to defeat these bodies is extremely difficult because each body has access to a single Rinnegan path, and they all share the same vision. Inoichi claims that although this method is somewhat similar to the Mind Body Switch used by the Yamanaka clan, it is more powerful and destructive.

Nature Mastery

Any user of the Rinnegan can master ninjutsu, as the eye grants the ability to fully master all natural transformations. Jiraiya’s disciple Nagato Uzumaki, as well as Madara, Obito, and Sasuke Uchiha, who used the eye, could fully control every nature transition. The eye user also finds it much simpler to learn any jutsu, thus solidifying Rinnegan’s position as the strongest of the “Three Great Dojutsu.”

Ability to see Limbo Clones

Although it cannot see past smokescreens or other obstacles, the Rinnegan has amazing vision abilities and can monitor the movement of the chakra and the chakra pathway system. The ability of Rinnegan to see things that exist in a different plane of existence is unique.

The Sharingan and the Byakugan could not perceive Madara Uchiha’s Limbo clones, which were already invisible to ordinary people. The only eye able to see through such a complicated Jutsu is the Rinnegan.

Summoning the king of hell

Rinnegan users can call upon the deity known as the King of Hell thanks to the Naraka Path, which is renowned for bestowing two abilities. The other ability this path offers is restoration, which is arguably the most practical ability available to Rinnegan users.

The King of Hell can be used to capture victims and then question and kill them. As demonstrated when the Asura Path was revived shortly after being destroyed by Choji and Choza, anybody placed inside the King of Hell is completely restored.

Soul Ripping

Some of the most amazing skills, both in and out of battle, are embedded in the Human Path of the Rinnegan. This Human Path method allows the user to pull out a person’s soul through physical contact, instantly killing the victim. When they fought in the Fourth Great Ninja War, Nagato Uzumaki was spotted using this power on Naruto Uzumaki, and if Itachi Uchiha hadn’t intervened, Naruto might have died there and then.

Creating mechanical body parts

The Asura Path’s power is arguably Rinnegan’s least-used ability. The user of this skill can mechanically change their own body. One of the Paths of Pain that Nagato Uzumaki was in control of heavily used this power. Although it has only been utilized a few times, the weapons created along this path are still highly useful and can kill a strong shinobi with a single hit.

The Deva Path

The Deva Path can be used to access one of Rinnegan’s most potent powers. Through the employment of Bansho Ten’in and Shinra Tensei, the practitioner of this path can push or pull objects either toward themselves or away with great force.

This power can even be utilized to quickly wipe out an entire village when combined with a sufficient amount of chakra. Using the alluring Chibaku Tensei of the Six Paths, Hagoromo and Hamura Otsutsuki were able to construct the moon.

Why Does Sasuke Only Have One Rinnegan?

There are several speculations as to why Uchiha Sasuke has only one Rinnegan. But, based on our analysis, the chakra of two of Hagoromo’s sons needs to be channeled for the Rinnegan to be activated in both eyes. However, Sasuke only received half chakra from Hagoromo.

He also received the Sage of Six Paths’ chakra from his left hand, causing the Rinnegan to be awakened in his left eye. Additionally, the Uchiha clan does not have the physical prowess in wielding Rinnegan in both eyes. Even Obito, who Madara regarded as his best substitute, stated that he could not handle the implantation of both Rinnegan.

Also, Madara couldn’t handle both Rinnegan and was only able to wield them because of Hashirama’s cells; as such, it can be said that Sasuke, who doesn’t have any form of Uzumaki or Senju DNA in him, would not be able to handle both Rinnegan.

It is possible that the reason Hagoromo only gave Sasuke half of his chakra is that he knows that Sasuke may not be able to handle awakening the Rinnegan in both his eyes. Also, the Rinnegan wielded by Sasuke is not the same as Kaguya’s or Madara’s. Plus, Sasuke’s Rinnegan has six unique tomoes and seems like it is meant to be implanted in one eye.

Can Sasuke Turn Off His Rinnegan?

Although Sasuke’s Rinnegan is unique with its six tomoes, He can’t deactivate or turn off his Rinnegan. However, without the tomoes, the powers of his Rinnegan can be diminished, but they cannot be completely turned off.

Instead, only the tomoes can be turned off and on. The only person known to turn off his Rinnegan is Madara, who turned it off in the Naruto Manga and Anime while he was an Edo Tensei and the Jinchuriki of Jubi.

How Did Sasuke Lose His Rinnegan?

Sasuke lost his Rinnegan after being stabbed with a Kunai in his left eye by a Momoshiki-possessed Boruto in the fight against Isshiki Otsutsuki. This is because Momoshiki was trying to prevent Sasuke’s squad from teleporting. (One of Rinnegan’s uses is Teleportation).

From losing his Rinnegan, Sasuke lost his abilities like Chakra absorption, space-time Ninjutsu, planetary devastation, and many more.

In What Episode Does Sasuke Lose His Rinnegan?

Uchiha Sasuke lost his Rinnegan eye in episode 218 of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations titled “partner.” During the Naruto and Sasuke vs. Ishiki fight in another dimension in episode 218, Naruto and Sasuke were defeated by Ishiki.

Ishiki tried to attack Kawaki, but Kawaki was on the verge of launching a fire-style attack on Ishiki. However, Ishiki managed to grab Kawaki and almost implanted another Karma on him. It turns out  Kawaki was a shadow clone and crumbled before Ishiki.

While Sasuke and Kawaki went to check on Naruto, who was experiencing some side effects of using his Baryon mode, Momoshiki possessed Boruto’s body and quickly stabbed Sasuke’s Rinnegan to make sure that they would have no way to return.

Does Sasuke Get His Rinnegan Back?

Because Sasuke is not the protagonist of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, it is unlikely that he will get back his Rinnegan. However, fans have debated the possibility of the return of Sasuke’s Rinnegan, with some fans speculating that Sasuke can obtain Ashura’s chakra from Naruto and then combine it with his to form another Rinnegan which could end up being artificial.

However, the Naruto franchise has a repetitive theme of the current generation surpassing the previous generation, making two of the strongest characters significantly weaker to highlight the current generation’s protagonist. Like Naruto lost his Kurama, Sasuke has lost his Rinnegan, and he will likely never regain it.
