The Rinnegan is known to only awaken in persons who significantly change the course of the world, making it the strongest of the three eyes. Sasuke Uchiha, who was already Indra Otsutsuki’s reincarnation (Indra is Hagoromo’s son), encountered Hagoromo when conversing in his subconscious with Hagoromo Otsutsuki as he was close to death during the Fourth Great Ninja War. At this time, he was on the verge of death, but fate was working to bring him back to life through Kabuto, who gave a portion of his body to heal him.
Obtaining the Rinnegan isn’t quite simple. There are only three known people in the entire Naruto Anime world that have this power. Why Does Sasuke Only Have One Rinnegan?
There are several speculations as to why Uchiha Sasuke has only one Rinnegan. But, based on our analysis, the chakra of two of Hagoromo’s sons needs to be channeled for the Rinnegan to be activated in both eyes. However, Sasuke only received half chakra from Hagoromo.
He also received the Sage of Six Paths’ chakra from his left hand, causing the Rinnegan to be awakened in his left eye. Additionally, the Uchiha clan does not have the physical prowess in wielding Rinnegan in both eyes. Even Obito, who Madara regarded as his best substitute, stated that he could not handle the implantation of both Rinnegan.
Also, Madara couldn’t handle both Rinnegan and was only able to wield them because of Hashirama’s cells; as such, it can be said that Sasuke, who doesn’t have any form of Uzumaki or Senju DNA in him, would not be able to handle both Rinnegan.
It is possible that the reason Hagoromo only gave Sasuke half of his chakra is that he knows that Sasuke may not be able to handle awakening the Rinnegan in both his eyes. Also, the Rinnegan wielded by Sasuke is not the same as Kaguya’s or Madara’s. Plus, Sasuke’s Rinnegan has six unique tomoes and seems like it is meant to be implanted in one eye.
Can Sasuke Turn Off His Rinnegan?
Although Sasuke’s Rinnegan is unique with its six tomoes, He can’t deactivate or turn off his Rinnegan. However, without the tomoes, the powers of his Rinnegan can be diminished, but they cannot be completely turned off.
Instead, only the tomoes can be turned off and on. The only person known to turn off his Rinnegan is Madara, who turned it off in the Naruto Manga and Anime while he was an Edo Tensei and the Jinchuriki of Jubi.
How Did Sasuke Lose His Rinnegan?
Sasuke lost his Rinnegan after being stabbed with a Kunai in his left eye by a Momoshiki-possessed Boruto in the fight against Isshiki Otsutsuki. This is because Momoshiki was trying to prevent Sasuke’s squad from teleporting. (One of Rinnegan’s uses is Teleportation).

In What Episode Does Sasuke Lose His Rinnegan?
Uchiha Sasuke lost his Rinnegan eye in episode 218 of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations titled “partner.” During the Naruto and Sasuke vs. Ishiki fight in another dimension in episode 218, Naruto and Sasuke were defeated by Ishiki.
Ishiki tried to attack Kawaki, but Kawaki was on the verge of launching a fire-style attack on Ishiki. However, Ishiki managed to grab Kawaki and almost implanted another Karma on him. It turns out Kawaki was a shadow clone and crumbled before Ishiki.
While Sasuke and Kawaki went to check on Naruto, who was experiencing some side effects of using his Baryon mode, Momoshiki possessed Boruto’s body and quickly stabbed Sasuke’s Rinnegan to make sure that they would have no way to return.
Does Sasuke Get His Rinnegan Back?
Because Sasuke is not the protagonist of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, it is unlikely that he will get back his Rinnegan. However, fans have debated the possibility of the return of Sasuke’s Rinnegan, with some fans speculating that Sasuke can obtain Ashura’s chakra from Naruto and then combine it with his to form another Rinnegan which could end up being artificial.
However, the Naruto franchise has a repetitive theme of the current generation surpassing the previous generation, making two of the strongest characters significantly weaker to highlight the current generation’s protagonist.
